Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Architecture, Department of Architecture, which completed its 20th year in education in 2011 – 2012 Academic Year, has become the second architecture program which has been accredited for 6 years by the Turkish Council of Accreditation for Architecture (MIAK).

Evaluation of the application which was made by the EMU Department of Architecture for the accreditation status in January 2010, has been finalized by the Turkish Council of Accreditation for Architecture (MIAK) during their 34th meeting on 11th of July of 2011 and the program has been accredited for “6 years which will contain a private evaluation at the end of 3 years.”

EMU program of Architecture has the characteristic of being the 4th accredited program amongst all the architecture programs in Turkey and North Cyprus which are over 60. It is the first program which has been accredited for 6 years amongst the programs which take place in the universities with boards of trustees. It is the first and the only accredited architectural program in North Cyprus. Thus, this accreditation is evidence of the role of leadership of the EMU program of architecture within its region.

The institution`s confidence about the quality of education it gives, supports it to take part within national accreditation processes such as MIAK and international accreditation processes such as RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) and NAAB (The National Architectural Accrediting Board) with great transparency. This attitude also gives it a chance for raising its success level even to higher positions.

Since every country in Europe determines its own standards for quality assurance, which are appropriate to its own education system, the main system for the assurance of quality in education is formed by the independent quality agencies, in other words the accreditation given by the accreditation councils. Accreditation seriously affects the processes of determining equivalency of the degrees given by different schools and because of this, students have started to prefer schools with accreditation as a guarantee of the future recognition of their degrees.

MIAK is an institution which contributes to the wellbeing of society by enforcing better education for architects. It lets comparison of different departments of architecture without destroying their peculiarities. Its evaluation criteria contain evaluation of the education program, the knowledge and skills gained by the graduates, human resources as well as physical and financial resources.

The accreditation process starts with the preparation and evaluation of a embracing self-evaluation report. The process proceeds with the visit of an evaluation team, during which meetings with students, academic staff and administrators are arranged. Evaluation continues regularly after being accredited as well. With the help of a process as such, it is expected from the institutions to develop habits of self-criticism and a tendency to change towards better states.

Members of the accreditation council are determined by the organization of heads of departments of Architecture in Turkey and North Cyprus (MOBBIG) and the Union of Turkish Chambers of Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), Chamber of Architects. After Anatolia University, Yildiz Technical University and Istanbul Culture University accreditation, the Department of Architecture of EMU has also succeeded in being accredited by MIAK.

EMU Department of Architecture has more than 600 under-graduate students, 3 post-graduate programs and a PhD program, which have more than 150 students. Education has been continued with 4 professors, 7 associate professors, 10 assistant professors, 2 instructors, 10 part-time instructors and 23 research assistants.

EMU Department of Architecture is an international community, because it`s academic staff and students are from many different countries. This year, it renewed its recognition in the international arena by being successful also in the area of national accreditation. The reasons of this success are the international recognition of the academic staff, their high quality scientific publications and their experience in education. The academic staff`s consciousness about being members of a dynamic institution which has done a lot towards national and international accreditation, causes them to be self-critical professionals, who see student centered education as a target. These characteristics make EMU Department of Architecture an important center of academic attraction in Mediterranean Region.

EMU Department of Architecture also contributes to the development of European architectural education by being a member of European Association of Architectural Education (EAAE).
